Global Community Series: Air Quality Data & Citizen Science - Pushing for Environmental Justice

video thumbnail
This is a recording of a virtual webinar held on September 29, 2020

Citizen science has played a powerful role in shifting the air quality landscape, placing power in the hands of communities that have long suffered from air pollution exposure. The proliferation of low-cost sensing technologies, mobile apps, and online forums have provided meaningful ways for everyday citizens to engage in collecting air quality data to raise public awareness of air pollution, hold polluting industries accountable, and push for long-term change in their local communities. How have citizen science movements been successful in fighting air inequality? How has the availability of or lack of air quality data prompted these movements? What are some challenges that citizen science initiatives continue to face? What are some lessons learned from different cross-contextual examples? This webinar highlights important community initiatives from around the world.

Our panelists include Dr. Sacoby Wilson from the University of Maryland, Abid Omar from Pakistan Air Quality Initiative, Azjargal Tsogtsaikhan from Breathe Mongolia, Jacob Crane from SLC Air Protectors, and Antonio Garcia Esquivel from CitySense.
