STORYLINE
Some residents in the Kenyan capital Nairobi expressed hope that the arrival of former United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan on Tuesday would put an end to a political dispute, which triggered riots and ethnic fighting that has killed more than 600 people.
"We are just praying that these leaders will stop being so selfish and put Kenyans first. That's what we are all hoping for," said Catherine Maingi, a Nairobi resident.
Annan was due in Kenya on Tuesday to mediate a deadly dispute over the country's presidential election.
The December 27 election returned Kenyan President Mwai Kibaki to power for a second five-year term, with official results putting opposition leader Raila Odinga second in the closest presidential race in Kenya's history.
But foreign and local election observers have said the vote count was deeply flawed.
Although the electoral chief pronounced Kibaki the victor, he later said he had been pressured to do so and did not know who won.
Efforts at international mediation so far have failed.
"If Annan is going to agree with Kibaki and Raila, we are going to have peace, if they are not going to agree, there is no peace," said Reuben Luango, another Nairobi resident.
