This is the tutorial for my ORIGAMI WINTER TREE. I sort of reinvented the wheel with this design. Last year, I was trying to make an origami bonsai tree but all the tutorials I could find used paper mache branches. I wanted mine to be all origami so I started designing branches. What you see in this video is what I came up with. As a matter of fact, the last tree on the right at the end of the video IS the one I folded last year. I decided to do this tutorial after I found it while organizing my origami workspace last weekend. After coming up with a design, I found a few designs using the same origami technique to create branches. I should give a shout out to a model called Tree Of Death by Spliffonaut and Eric Joisel's Ent. You may find it tedious to fold all the pleats to make this model. I like pleating. As a origami designer starting out, a logical place to begin many model ideas is with pleating. My last model, Scalloped Bowl, and my next, Flying Squirrel, use it too. There are many different ways to fold different combinations of branches after you have the 32 x 32 grid folded. Always use an even number of squares when spacing branch points. The more branches you have on each row, the shorter they all are on that row. That makes sense, right? I recommend 6 - 7 points on the bottom row of roots, 5 - 6 points for the lower branches, and 4 - 5 points for the longer upper branches. This makes the base stable and the tree shaped more tree-like. The most important part of this model is probably the shaping. You may spend as much time shaping the branches and roots as you spend pleating. TO SHAPE THE BRANCHES, find the middle space between the flaps of a main branch and press each side to round them. Articulate on the folds that run at odd angles to the branches to give them more character. The main trunk should be divided in half and squished on either side as well to make it rounded. Notice that the bottom set of branches will move away from the top set while you are originally forming all the flaps. The different looking tree in the middle is an example of how differently you can choose to make the branched from the 32 x 32 grid. I believe I started it by folding a valley fold at 5 down, mountain fold at 9 down, valley fold at 14 down, and mountain fold at 18 down. The roots were spaced by 2's and 4's and kind of just squished flat to hold it up. The branches are, I believe, all 4's and 5's. There are an almost infinite number of ways you can fold something plantlike using this technique. I'd love to see a picture of what YOU create.
