Awaken to the Truth Through George Gurdjieff's Eternal Wisdom.
George Ivanovich Gurdjieff was a Russian philosopher, mystic, spiritual teacher, and composer of Armenian and Greek descent. Gurdjieff taught that most humans do not possess a unified consciousness and thus live their lives in a state of hypnotic "waking sleep", but that it is possible to awaken to a higher state of consciousness and achieve full human potential. Gurdjieff described a method attempting to do so, calling the discipline "The Work" (connoting "work on oneself") or "the System".According to his principles and instructions, Gurdjieff's method for awakening one's consciousness unites the methods of the fakir, monk and yogi, and thus he referred to it as the "Fourth Way". Gurdjieff's Quotes: 1. Awakening begins when a man realizes that he is going nowhere and does not know where to go. 2. The evolution of man is the evolution of his consciousness, and 'consciousness' cannot evolve unconsciously. The evolution of man is the evolution of his will, and 'will' cannot evolve involuntarily. 3. Begin with the possible; begin with one step. 4. One of the best means for arousing the wish to work on yourself is to realize that you may die at any moment. But first you must learn how to keep it in mind. 5. You can never awaken using the same system that put you to sleep in the first place. 6. What you need to know is very little, but to know that little takes very very much. 7. The highest that a man can attain is to be able to do. 8. Without struggle, no progress and no result. Every breaking of habit produces a change in the machine. 9. Man must use what he has, not hope for what is not. 10. It is only by grounding our awareness in the living sensation of our bodies that the 'I Am,' our real presence, can awaken. 11. Self-observation brings man to the realization of the necessity of self-change. And in observing himself a man notices that self-observation itself brings about certain changes in his inner processes. He begins to understand that self-observation is an instrument of self-change, a means of awakening. 12. Real love is a cosmic force which goes through us. If we crystallize it, it becomes the greatest power in the world. 13. Conscious faith is freedom. Emotional faith is slavery. Mechanical faith is foolishness. 14. That which is easy is bad for your inner life. 15. Believe nothing, not even yourself. 16. He who has gotten rid of the disease of "tomorrow" has a chance of achieving what he is here for. 17. Without self knowledge, without understanding the working and functions of his machine, man cannot be free, he cannot govern himself and he will always remain a slave. 18. It is the greatest mistake to think that man is always one and the same. A man is never the same for long. He is continually changing. He seldom remains the same even for half an hour. 19. Each minute, each moment, man is saying or thinking, 'I'. And each time his 'I' is different. Just now it was a thought, now it is a desire, now a sensation, now another thought, and so on, endlessly. Man is a plurality. Man's name is legion. 20. One may say that evil does not exist for subjective man at all, that there exist only different conceptions of good. Nobody ever does anything deliberately in the interests of evil, for the sake of evil. Everybody acts in the interests of good, as he understands it. But everybody understands it in a different way. Consequently men drown, slay, and kill one another in the interests of good. 21. If you help others, you will be helped, perhaps tomorrow, perhaps in one hundred years, but you will be helped. Nature must pay off the debt. It is a mathematical law and all life is mathematics. 22. From looking at your neighbor and realizing his true significance, and that he will die, pity and compassion will arise in you for him and finally you will love him. 23. Knowledge by itself does not give understanding. Nor is understanding increased by an increase of knowledge alone. Understanding depends upon the relation of knowledge to being...It appears only when a man feels and senses what is connected with it. 24. Life is real only then, when "I am". 25. Remember yourself always and everywhere. #quotes #gurdjieff #enlightenment #awakening #awareness #consciousness #badassquotes #greatestquotes #bestquotes #famousquotes #quotesonlife #quotesonlove #wisequotes #wisemenquotes #celebrityquotes #folkwisdom #lifechanging quotes #motivationalquotes #inspirationalquotes #powerfulquotes #goodquotes #goodoldquotes #leadershipquotes #peacefulquotes #zenquotes #oshoquotes #buddhaquotes #presidentialquotes |
