Truck drivers are dodging the tolls on the M8 tunnel in Sydney's south, clogging up suburban roads. Local business owners in areas like Bexley say the noise is unbearable and hurting their bottom lines.

Since the opening of the M8 motorway there has been a big increase in truck traffic on local roads with drivers trying to avoid the $24 toll for heavy vehicles.

The review of the first year of operation for Westconnex shows a 20 percent increase in traffic on Stoney Creek and Forest Road through Kingsgrove, Bexley and Arncliffe.

With speeds in places dropping as much as 8km/h, and one intersection recorded a 38 percent increase in heavy vehicles.

Canterbury Road has also seen up to a 14% increase in peak hour traffic.
