Rotator cuff tear means a tear in the inner muscles of the shoulder joint which leads to weakness of the shoulder and pain. The weakness will be especially in the initial arc of movement. Cuff tears can occur due to a sudden insult like a fall on the hand or while lifting a heavy object in an awkward position, or, by a gradual rubbing of the shoulder ball bone (humerus) on the under surface of the acromion bone above it.
