Veterans Tip of the Week - Why You Should Join-up

It is often said that we are stronger together than we are individually. Anyone who has served knows this to be true. It is particularly true with national level Veteran Service Organizations (VSOs). These groups represent millions of members across the country, and the world for that matter. The VFW alone has 1.7 million members. These are numbers your elected officials take notice of.

In addition to the local connection, access to many programs and support initiatives, camaraderie and a place where you will be welcomed, the reason you should join the local chapter or post of one of these national level VSOs, is to add your voice to the chorus and your name to the rolls. Numbers matter, they equate to clout in the political arena, and allow for VSOs nationally to be the watchdogs on Congress. How many times have we heard about benefits being stripped away, programs gutted or funding being shot off, only to find that the actual legislation is not quite as bad as we thought? Do you like your COLA? Did you get your Veterans ID card and access to the exchange? Who do you think fights for these issues. Individual veterans certainly have a voice, and they can engage in the political process by writing their elected officials. How much more effective is that engagement if you have several million fellow veterans standing right behind you?
