Last December i had the chance of spending a whole week with Virginia Nicoli and Igino Giovanni Brunori (Samvad Music) at their wonderful place in the mountains of North Italy, where we rehearsed and tried things for a forthcoming project. For some years we had talked of coming together and making music together, as we always marvelled at the somewhat rare, yet familiar, sound the combination of our instruments produced: the ney, the bansuri, the silver flute and the saxophone.

Virginia and Igino have spend the last decade, or more, of their life, travelling and studying the classical music of North India, especially the vocal style called ‘Dhrupad’. Maybe some centuries-old connections bridge the musics coming from India and the ones that are played in the eastern part of the Mediterranean, through the similar material (the reed in the ney and the bansuri) or even through the similar modal systems of the Ragas & Makams.

We decided to go on making music, informed by our classical background, but not tied to any preconceived ideas of how things should sound like. This piece is a home recording of one of the improvisations that emerged the last days of our meeting. We thought of sharing it here and call it: “The Waiting”. Enjoy!

Τον περασμένο Δεκέμβρη είχα την ευκαιρία να περάσω μια ολόκληρη εβδομάδα με την Virginia Nicoli και τον Igino Giovanni Brunori (Samvad Music) στο υπέροχο χωριό τους στα βουνά της Βόρειας Ιταλίας. Εκεί παίξαμε και δοκιμάσαμε ιδέες προετοιμάζοντας ένα καινούργιο σχήμα. Εδώ και μερικά χρόνια είχαμε πει να βρεθούμε, καθώς πάντα μας ενθουσίαζε ο ήχος που παρήγαγε ο συνδιασμός των οργάνων που παίζουμε: ένας συνδιασμός ταυτόχρονα παράξενος και οικείος: το νέυ, το μπανσούρι, το μεταλλικό φλάουτο και το σαξόφωνο.

Η Virginia και ο Igino έχουν περάσει την τελευταία δεκαετία, ή και περισσότερο, ταξιδεύοντας και μελετώντας την κλασική μουσική της Βόρειας Ινδίας, ιδιαίτερα το φωνητικό είδος που ονομάζεται ‘Dhrupad’. Συνδέσεις αιώνων, ίσως, γεφυρώνουν τις μουσικές που έρχονται από την Ινδία και αυτές που ακούγονται στο ανατολικό μέρος της Μεσογείου, ίσως μέσα από την συγγένεια του υλικού (τόσο το νέυ όσο και το μπανσούρι είναι φτιάχνονται από καλάμι, αν και διαφορετικού είδους) ή και την συγγένεια των τροπικών μουσικών συστημάτων των Raga και των Μακάμ, Ήχων, Τρόπων.

Παρόλο το ‘κλασικό’ μας παρελθόν αποφασίσαμε να ξεκινήσουμε την μουσική χωρίς μια προκαθορισμένη ιδέα για το πώς πρέπει να ακουστεί. Αυτό το κομμάτι είναι η ηχογράφηση ενός αυτοσχεδιασμού, που προέκυψε μια από τις τελευταίες μέρες της συνάντησης. Σκεφτήκαμε να το μοιραστούμε εδωπέρα και να το ονομάσουμε ‘Αναμονή’.
