Palm oil cultivation overtakes small-holder coconut oil in Southeast Asia

Indonesia and the Philippines account for 60% of the world’s coconut production. But coconut farmers are facing challenges due to low prices. One reason? Competition from subsidized palm oil. It has taken over coconut oil sales in Southeast Asian grocery stores.

Palm oil’s price is half that of coconut oil. And coconut oil is now selling for less than half the price of what it used to.
