Biophilia & Biophilic Design: A Solution To Climate Change Mitigation | Wangui Mwangi | TEDxKisumu |
|
Our love for nature, biophilia, is in our DNA, a legacy from our natural past. This translates to mental, physical, and emotional benefits when we're in nature, yet urbanization disconnects us. Green movements are essential, but biophilic design goes further, integrating nature into buildings through elements like light, plants, and water. Studies show benefits in hospitals (faster recovery) and workplaces (increased productivity). As demand for these spaces grows, both indoor and outdoor environments will benefit. This is crucial, as buildings are major climate change contributors. Biophilic design offers a path towards a sustainable future, allowing us to build healthier spaces and reconnect with nature through the places we live, work, and heal. Wangui Mwangi is an experienced Interior Designer. An EDGE Certified Green Building Consultant, a Biophilic Design Researcher, and a Champion in Kenya. Moreover, she is passionate about researching and incorporating African vernacular architecture into modern design. She has worked in several places, at Italbuild Imports as an Interior Designer in Kenya Green Building Society as a Youth Chapter Board member and as a Research and Dissemination Lead on sustainability and climate change mitigation. Wangui has been actively demystifying and championing biophilic design and green building through her LinkedIn page; she has acquired a huge and active following. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
