United Airlines training check airman, Captain Denny Fitch recounts the events that took place on July 19, 1989 when flight UA 232 en route to Chicago from Denver suffered an uncontained, catastrophic failure of engine number 2 that resulted in the loss of all hydraulic power in all 3 hydraulic systems. Unable to control the aircraft by means of its aerodynamic surfaces, Captain Fitch found that marginal control over the aircraft could be gained by applying differential thrust on the remaining two engines, allowing the crew to crash land the plane in Sioux City, Iowa.
