An Educator in the Margins Creating Classroom Spaces of Resistance | Arianna Bustos | TEDxBGSU

My idea worth sharing is a culturally responsive approach to creating spaces of resistance to systemic issues such as the School to Prison Pipeline, Disproportionality, The Opportunity Gap, etc. These issues at hand are typically heighted for students of color especially racially marginalized students coming from low socioeconomic backgrounds. My hope is to present how educational disparities and inequities harm students of color. More specifically how schools expect students of color to successfully navigate and feel a sense of belonging within our American education system despite not addressing these issues or designing curriculum to be responsive to the diverse cultural learning needs of students of color. I am a fourth year teacher candidate currently in student teaching graduating in April 2022. I am an Adolescence/Young Adult Secondary Education Integrated Language Arts (AYA ILA Major). I am a student leader on campus, I am a Student Ambassador for the College of Education and Human Development. I am also the Vice-President for the student-led organization Inclusive Culturally Responsive Educators. I am a culturally responsive curriculum developer for the College of Education and Human Development. I will be pursuing a Masters in Curriculum and Teaching and BGSU after undergrad. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
