How Y-DNA can help your One Name Study

video thumbnail
This presentation is for those who have already set up a Y-DNA project or are participating in one. We will discuss criteria that can be used for allocating people to the same genetic group/cluster, including genetic distance, the TiP Tool, and “rare” marker values. We will also discuss the potential risk of convergence and how to handle it; what to do beyond the standard Y-DNA-37 marker test and when to test multiple family members in order to triangulate; how Haplogroup (and to a lesser extent Geographic projects) may be informative; and how SNP testing (including the Big Y, YSEQ, and other SNP tests) are transforming the interpretation of standard Y-DNA STR data. We will also touch on the importance of publishing your results as a means of keeping track of what you have done, as a service to project members, and as a way of attracting new recruits.
