Edward Christopher Sheeran was born in Halifax, West Yorkshire, England on 17 February 1991.[2][10] His early childhood home was on Birchcliffe Road in nearby Hebden Bridge.[11] His father was a curator at Cartwright Hall in Bradford and his mother worked at Manchester City Art Gallery.[11] In December 1995 he moved with his family from Hebden Bridge to Framlingham in Suffolk,[12][13] where he attended the independent Brandeston Hall preparatory school (now Framlingham College Prep School),[14][15][16] then Thomas Mills High School, also in Framlingham.[17][18] He has an older brother named Matthew, who works as a composer.[19] Sheeran's parents, John and Imogen, are from London. His paternal grandparents are Irish,[20][21][22] and Sheeran has stated that his father is from a "very large" Catholic family.[23] John is an art curator and lecturer, and Imogen is a culture publicist turned jewellery designer.[21][24] His parents ran Sheeran Lock, an independent art consultancy, from 1990 to 2010.[25]

Sheeran sang at a local church choir at the age of four, learned how to play the guitar at age eleven,[26] and began writing songs while at Thomas Mills High School in Framlingham.[17][18] A 2004 school report described him as a "natural performer", and his classmates also voted him "most likely to be famous".[27] He was accepted at the National Youth Theatre in London as a teenager.[28][29] He successfully auditioned for Youth Music Theatre UK in 2007 and joined their production of Frankenstein in Plymouth.[30] He is a patron of Youth Music Theatre UK (now renamed British Youth Music Theatre)[31] and of Access to Music, where he studied Artist Development.[32][33] Sheeran is a second cousin of Northern Irish broadcaster Gordon Burns,[34] who hosted the British game show The Krypton Factor.[21]

After initially signing with eleven-eleven after performing on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, Puth began contributing to songs and albums for other artists such as Cody Simpson, Livingston Taylor, and Skizzy Mars; as well as creating lite solo material and covers of popular songs. With primary intent on a solo career, Atlantic Records eventually sought the artist and released his debut single, "Marvin Gaye" featuring Meghan Trainor in 2015 to unanimous success. Coinciding with the single came his first feature, "See You Again", which he co-wrote, co-produced, and performed with Wiz Khalifa for the Furious 7 soundtrack as a tribute to Paul Walker. It peaked at number one on the US Billboard Hot 100 for 12 non-consecutive weeks. After the success of "See You Again", he gained worldwide recognition for multiple subsequent releases, including his next single "One Call Away". The single reached number 12 on the Billboard Hot 100, and topped charts in New Zealand, the Republic of Ireland, and the United Kingdom.

Puth's debut studio album, Nine Track Mind, was released in January 2016 to negative reviews from critics, and was preceded by the singles "One Call Away" and "We Don't Talk Anymore", which peaked at number 12 and number nine, respectively on the US Billboard Hot 100. In 2017, he released two songs, "Attention" and "How Long", with the former peaking at number five on Billboard Hot 100. Both were included in his second studio album, Voicenotes (2018), which was released to positive reviews from critics and peaked at number four on the Billboard 200. In 2019, Puth released the singles "I Warned Myself", "Mother" and "Cheating On You". His third studio album is expected to be released in 2020.
