A conversation with award-winning author, journalist and activist Helen Zia who has spent her life advocating for civil rights and countering hate violence. Helen will discuss her crucial role on the Asian American landmark civil rights case of anti-Asian violence, which is documented in the Academy Award nominated film, "Who Killed Vincent Chin?" and her first book Asian American Dreams: The Emergence of an American People. She will also discuss her latest 2019 book, Last Boat out of Shanghai, which traces the lives of immigrants and refugees during a time of mass exodus in the wake of China’s 1949 Communist revolution that has striking parallels to the difficulties facing migrants today.

Helen is a former Executive Editor of Ms. Magazine and a founding board co-chair of the Women’s Media Center. Her ground-breaking articles, essays and reviews have appeared in many publications, books and anthologies, receiving numerous awards.
The daughter of immigrants from China, Helen was profiled in Bill Moyers’ PBS series, "Becoming American: The Chinese Experience" and in 2010, she was a witness in the federal marriage equality case decided by the US Supreme Court.
