Masterclass Trainers: Mia Costello and Steve Taschini

Mia Costello is a freelance editorial trainer with the BBC College of Journalism, having spent more than 20 years as a senior editor with the organization in TV, Radio and Online. She now works with broadcasters around the world, such as RTE and France 24 devising and delivering bespoke journalism training.

Most recently she has:
• Led the BBC’s Editorial Leadership training for BBC editors
• Led training sessions on key journalism skills for the BBC’s prestigious ‘Journalism Trainee Scheme’
• Produced an intensive two-week course in investigative journalism for the Irish broadcasters, RTE
• Led storytelling and creativity workshops in Croatia, Hungary and Spain with the European TV training body, Circom Regional
• Trained political journalists in story telling at the European Parliament in Brussels and Strasbourg.
• Trained on-screen presentation staff at the English language news channel, France 24 in Paris.
• Mia spent 10 years in TV, first as a reporter and then as Programme Editor for the BBC’s nightly news show, South Today. She led the development of a new regional television opt-out service for Oxford, pioneering VJ working. She moved on to lead one of the BBC’s largest local radio stations, as Managing Editor of BBC Radio Solent.

Mia has a post graduate diploma in radio journalism from City University in London.

Steve Taschini is the former Head of TV Training for the BBC College of Journalism and a senior editor with the BBC for more than 20 years.

As Head of TV Training until 2013, he was responsible for coaching and training across the BBC’s Network and Global News services, BBC Sport and regional news teams throughout the UK.

Previously, Steve was the Executive Editor at BBC Oxford, editorially responsible for the nightly news output for the region on BBC 1, plus all radio and online output.

Most recently he has been working with the BBC training bi-lingual journalists in presentation, storytelling and production skills. He also provides training for major media organisations such as NRK in Norway to help develop multi media working.

Steve is an Industry Advisor to the degree course in Broadcast Journalism at the University of Leeds and will be working again with the University of Bedfordshire and Northumbria University as a visiting Editor.
