Earthquake victims in China forced to stay in their Sichuan homes amid strict Covid lockdown

Residents in a Chinese city rocked by an earthquake were forced to stay in their homes under strict Covid lockdown, triggering anger at authorities.

A 6.8 magnitude earthquake struck the mountainous Luding County in the southwestern Sichuan province on Monday, causing 65 deaths and hundreds of injuries, state media reported on Tuesday.

Rescuers were working to retrieve more than 200 people stranded in the quake zone, reopening roads and restoring telecommunications services and water utilities.

Meanwhile, in Sichuan’s metropolis capital of Chengdu, situated about 230 kilometres east of Luding County, reports emerged that people were not being allowed to leave their apartment buildings due to Covid-19 restrictions – despite feeling the earthquake tremors and fearing aftershocks.
