Physician Distress and Burnout, the Neurobiological Perspective

video thumbnail
Dr. Amy Arnsten, a Researcher from the Department of Neuroscience at Yale University School of Medicine in New Haven, CT, and Dr. Tait Shanafelt, Chief Wellness officer from the Department of Medicine at Stanford University School of Medicine, in Stanford, CA, review their article appearing in the March 2021 issue of Mayo Clinic Proceedings where, they analyze the role of the brain’s prefrontal cortex in responding to and processing stress. They note the feeling of uncontrolled stress contributes to burnout which may explain some factors associated with physician burnout. They propose fostering reduction in uncontrolled stress in physicians may be helpful in mitigating burnout in physicians which will in turn improve health care and patient satisfaction.
