Aston Villa have booked their place in the Carabao Cup final after Trezeguet sank Leicester with an injury time winner at Villa Park.

After a draw in the first leg at the King Power Stadium, a penalty shoot-out looked to be looming large after Kelechi Iheanacho wiped out Matt Targett’s early opener to level the tie 2-2 on aggregate.

But Villa’s two Egyptians combined to book their trip to Wembley. Ahmed Elmohamady whipped in a superb cross from deep with his compatriot Trezeguet, a summer signing from Turkish side Kasımpaşa, peeling away from his marker to volley home from close range.

Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer branded Nemanja Matic’s sending off in Wednesday night’s Carabao Cup semi-final ‘a joke’, as his side were knocked out despite a 1-0 second-leg win over Manchester City at the Etihad.

Trailing 3-1 from the first-leg, United gave themselves a sniff of an unlikely turnaround when Matic thundered home midway through the first-half, but they were unable to find the goal that would have forced a penalty shootout, leaving City to advance as 3-2 aggregate winners.
