Vantage: Anna MacDonald explains how a team-based approach gives Amati an edge

video thumbnail
Vantage took the opportunity to meet Amati Global Investors’ Anna Macdonald when she visited London recently. We talked about the invasion of Ukraine and how the Amati team is protecting clients’ capital. We learn about Anna’s journey to her role at Amati, where she works with a close-knit team, and focus on two of the funds Anna co-manages, the Amati AIM VCT fund and the TB Amati UK Smaller Companies fund. Amati’s investment process is one of shared knowledge and intelligence, underpinned by its Connex system, which creates a record of interactions with issuers, brokers and analysts. The benefits of capturing these interactions allows the team to hold issuer management teams to account and provides a self-audit tool for learning. The team’s experience in resources and healthcare provides a more diversified portfolio compared to many of the peer group, and Anna gives examples with I3 Energy (I3E.L) and Serica Energy (SQZ.L). We then explore how Anna is positioning the portfolio as we emerge from the COVID-19 pandemic and some of the IPOs and positions she looked at last year, specifically talking about Accesso (ACSO.L), Auction Technology Group (ATG.L), Dianomi (DNM.L), TinyBuild (TBLD.L) and Saietta Group (SED.L). Finally, we learn about Anna’s experience of being on stage at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival – something she clearly enjoyed.
