The Hyundai Rotem manufacturer from South Korea (South Korea) is still negotiating with Poland regarding the offer of the K2PL Black Panther main battle tank (MBT) for Wojska Lądowe (Polish Army).
The negotiations, which have started since January 2020, are indeed tempting for any tank manufacturer. How not, the total need for the Polish Army's new generation MBT reaches 800 units. This amount is to replace around 500 Russian-made T-72 and PT-91 MBTs, as well as complete the German-made Leopard 2A4/A5 MBT fleet.
The most interesting offer from South Korea apart from the sophistication of the K2PL, which is a customized variant for Poland of the K2 Black Panther, is Hyundai Rotem's willingness for Poland to develop and produce its own K2PL by the Polish domestic industry.
The K2 Black Panther was designed by South Korea in the mid-1990s, but only entered service in 2014 after prototype trials began in 2008.
One of the sophistication of the Black Panther is the suspension system on the wheels of the tank which allows the stationary K2 to be locked in a "ducking" position (the front of the tank is lower than the rear), or vice versa.
The position locking thanks to the ISU (in-arm suspension unit) suspension system is intended to streamline the tank's main gun barrel in firing. The advantage of the "duckling" position, for example, is very strategic when K2 is on a hill and the opponent's position is near the foot of the hillside.
MBTs without ISU are not free to shoot in this situation considering that the barrel of a tank's main gun can generally only be lowered a few degrees from a straight forward (horizontal) position.
The price tag of the K2 is fantastic. The price per unit of K2 Black Panther is in the range of 8.5 million dollars. Compare that with the price per unit of the M1 Abrams MBT, the most sophisticated variant made in America, which costs "only" around 5-6 million dollars. This makes the Black Panther one of the most expensive tanks in the world.
