Poland recently concluded a landmark record contract with South Korea for the supply of K2 main battle tanks (MBT). In the two-stage lower program, Poland will acquire as many as 980 tanks dubbed the Black Panther.
Poland received the purchase of 180 K2 Black Panther tanks in Phase 1 and 800 tanks in the K2PL configuration which will be produced in Poland in Phase 2.
Polish Minister of National Defense Mariusz Blaszczak said on July 27, 2022, that 180 units of K2 Black Panther will be purchased this year as well.
"In the first batch, we will get 180 tanks, deliveries will start this year. The second phase is more than 800 K2PL standard tanks, which will be produced in Poland by the Polish defense industry thanks to the technology transfer we negotiated. Later, the tanks received in the first phase will also be polonized and brought to K2PL standards," said Baszczak.
The presence of the K2 Black Panther tank made in South Korea will replace the Polish Army's T-72 and PT-91. The K2 Black Panther is a main battle tank designed, developed and manufactured by the Hyundai Rotem company. Main armament is a German-manufactured Rheinmetall 120-mm/ L55 smoothbore gun produced under license in South Korea.
Apart from the K2 Black Panther, Poland also brought in 120 K9 Thunder SPH (self propelled howitzer) combat vehicle chassis made by Hanwha Defense. A total of 24 are directly from South Korea and the remaining 96 will be produced in Poland under license as part of the AHS Krab (Crab) program. Poland will also buy FA-50 Fighting Eagle light fighter jets made by KAI, as many as 48 jets were acquired to replace the Polish Air Force's MiG-29 Fulcrum.
