Elizabeth Flock discusses her book, "The Heart is a Shifting Sea", with NPR's Sam Sanders at Politics and Prose on 2/17/18.
Now a reporter for PBS NewsHour, Flock spent several years as a Mumbai-based features and investigative writer for Forbes India Magazine and her first book is a vivid profile of India’s largest metropolis as reflected in the lives of three middle-class couples. Writing with a depth and intimacy more often found in fiction, Flock chronicles an arranged marriage that evolves into true love, follows the struggles of a young professional couple to accommodate both partners’ ambitions and independence, and introduces an Islamic couple longing to have a child. Together, these three compelling narratives convey both the texture of daily lives in 21st-century Mumbai and illuminate the pressures on Indian society as technology and Western culture jars with tradition. Flock is in conversation with Sam Sanders, host of NPR'S It's Been a Minute. https://www.politics-prose.com/book/9780062456489 Founded by Carla Cohen and Barbara Meade in 1984, Politics and Prose Bookstore is Washington, D.C.'s premier independent bookstore and cultural hub, a gathering place for people interested in reading and discussing books.
