. BACnet is a data communication protocol which is most commonly used in today's Building Management Systems (BMS). BACnet is an acronym for Building Automation & Control Networks. BACnet is an open communication protocol so any manufacturer is free to develop BACnet products.
BACnet is an object oriented protocol; BACnet objects represent useful information which can be accessed by other BACnet devices on the network. Each BACnet object is defined by its properties.

Services are messages between different BACnet devices. Services are used to for exchange of information (objects) between different BACnet Devices. BACnet defines 38 services and categorize them into 5 groups which we explained in this video.

BACnet architecture is a collapsed version of OSI model and consist of 4 layers including application layer, network layer, Data link layer and Physical layer.

BACnet supports 5 LAN technologies of which BACnet IP and BACnet MSTP are most commonly used.

BACnet IP uses Internet Protocol(IP) for communication. BACnet IP devices can be directly plugged into network switches and can use the building's existing IT network. BACnet devices are more powerful and fast responding devices but usually we need to relay on IT teams for device connectivity on the existing IT network.
BACnet MSTP on other hand is Master slave token protocol which uses RS-485 electrical signaling for physical layer. BACnet MSTP devices are slow communicating but they are cost less so these are better suitable for unitary applications.
