In this video we explore the awesome game of Team Handball.

I researched the history some more and found it was started in the nineteenth century near Germany and Scandinavia.

Team Handball is an Olympic Sport.

How is it similar to Basketball?
Players play offense and defense.
Defenses can use a zone strategy.
Players can dribble but can’t double dribble.
Players use their hands to pass, not their feet.
Players want to score as many points before the end of the game to win.
Fouls and out of bounds result in Turnovers

How is it similar to Hockey?
Players go from playing offense to defense.
Their are goalies
Goalies have crease or any area in which the opponents cannot enter.
Goalies defend their net using any part of their body.
Players go to the penalty box for 2 minutes if they commit their 2nd or 3rd foul

How is it similar to Soccer?
Throw ins after turnover.
Throw off is similar to kickoff.
Coin toss to start.

How it’s Unique:
Teams are made up of 14 players with 6 on the playing field and 1 in the goal area. Players only get 3 seconds or 3 steps with the ball. Players can only score outside of the shooting zone. Defenders can form walls to block shots. Offensive players can jump before the shooting zone and into the area between the shooting zone and goal crease. No one but the goalie can enter the goal crease. If a defender steps into their own teams crease, the other team is rewarded with a penalty shot from 7 meters out. If an offensive player steps into the area between the shooting zone and goal crease without jumping into it or shooting, the ball is rewarded to the other team.

Their is no physicality and aggressive behaviors are penalized. If a player pushes, runs into or says something inappropriate, the referee will give the player a yellow card. On the second and third offense, it resulted in a 2 minutes misconduct whereby the player sits out for 2 minutes without a substitution. On the third misconduct, the player is given a red card and is escorted off of the field.

There are unlimited substitutions, and they occur during stoppage of play.
