An audience in the West was served by British philosopher Alan Wilson Watts' interpretation and popularization of Eastern thought. He was up in Chislehurst, England, and immigrated to the United States in 1938, when he started his Zen studies. He went to Seabury-Western Theological Seminary to pursue a profession, where he graduated with a master's in theology. In 1945, Watts was ordained as an Episcopal priest. He left the priesthood in 1950 and relocated to California, where he joined the American Academy of Asian Studies faculty.

While volunteering as a programmer at Berkeley's KPFA, a Pacifica Radio station, Watts developed a sizable fan base in the San Francisco Bay Area. The Way of Zen (1957), one of the first bestselling books on Buddhism, was one of more than 25 books and articles Watts wrote on topics crucial to Eastern and Western religion. He also introduced The Way of Zen to the then-emerging youth culture. Watts suggested in Psychotherapy East and West (1961) that Buddhism may be viewed as a type of psychotherapy rather than a religion. "From a literary point of view, the best book I have ever written," he said of Nature, Man and Woman (1958). In his 1958 essay "The New Alchemy" and book "The Joyous Cosmology," he also examined human consciousness (1962).

He split his time in his latter years between a houseboat in Sausalito and a cottage on Mount Tamalpais. Erik Davis, a critic, claims that "his writings and taped presentations still shimmer with a profound and energizing lucidity."
