How to Upgrade a Bowflex Max Trainer M3 or M5 to a M7 or M8 model

video thumbnail
This video demonstrates how to upgrade your current Bowflex Max Trainer M5 to a higher more premium version of the Max Trainer (M7/M8), using the upgraded M8 head unit upgrade kits offered from Bowflex (Not sure if this is available in Canada or other countries). Additional parts were also ordered to upgrade my Max Trainer to the more premium model M7/M8.

You could keep it simple and just order the kit made for the M5 upgrade that gives you the newer console but it is not as nice as the M8 console. The M8 has a nicer display and the premium heart rate grips that used to come on the M5, I found that upsetting that Bowflex would undercut quality like that. this was one of the main reasons for me doing this particular type of upgrade. Either way with the upgraded terminal you will have access to the JRNY app.

Please watch the entire video and attempt the upgrade at your own discretion.

Some skill is required to upgrade your model to the extent I did but it is not impossible or too overly complicated. The worst part was jumping through the hoops with Bowflex ordering parts.

this is the link to the bowflex Max trainer upgrade terminal page for you to compare the two.

I do not work for Bowflex and am in no way a fitness equipment repair man or anything like that. I am just a guy that wanted a more premium version of what he had and decided to improve and refresh my model as opposed to selling and replacing it with a higher end version.

I am very happy with the end result and am happy to report the machine works like new and operates as it should and as expected. Keep in mind Bowflex told me that it was IMPOSSIBLE to put any M7 or M8 parts on a M5 or lower model as they were not the same. Luckily I did some homework and research and found out that the models mechanics are identical across all three models. the only model with a difference from the M5 and M7 is the M3 that uses a adjustable handle grip on the right side where the heart rate grips are on the other models with a wire running down to the brake. The M5 and M7 use a servo motor with a shorter cable to adjust the resistance via the controls from the computer module.

If you call Bowflex to order your replacement parts especially the main wiring harness that corresponds to the model you are trying to achieve they will not willingly sell you those parts. You will have to tell them your machine was purchased second hand and that you do not have a serial number, you have to lie and tell them the parts you are ordering are for the machine you wish to have, not the machine you do have. Just remember lying is bad! Not sure why Bowflex cares what I do with my money! just sell me stuff and take my money!!
