Jon Jones Brawls With Daniel Cormier

Jon Jones brawls with Daniel Cormier and loses six figure deal. That infamous brawl with Daniel Cormier apparently cost Jon Jones a Nike sponsorship worth “over six figures,” the UFC light heavyweight champion and his representatives today said.

During a Nevada State Athletic Commission hearing in Las Vegas, Jones, who brawled with Cormier during an Aug. 4 media event in the city, confirmed the loss of the sponsorship.

Jones, who appeared before the commission prior to Cormier’s hearing, mentioned the lost sponsorship when commissioners first asked him what he felt was an appropriate punishment. He said he was already feeling ramifications due to the loss of a deal.

“It was Nike,” Jones said.

Ofir Ventura, a lawyer for Jones, didn’t want to disclose the exact amount of the Nike deal but said it was “over six figures” per year.

“It’s pretty damaging if you really consider it,” said Ventura, who said he’s worked with Jones during the past four years.

According to Ventura, the brawl also cost Jones another potential six-figure sponsorship. However, he didn’t disclose the company or how close the deal was to being finalized.

Ultimately, the NSAC today levied a $50,000 fine and 40 hours of community service to be done in the Las Vegas area for Jones’ involvement in the brawl (Cormier was subsequently fined $9,000 and ordered to do 20 hours of community service). Jones and his reps declined to comment after the hearing.

When announced in 2012, the Nike sponsorship marked a significant moment for MMA, which rarely saw its top athletes
signed to such blue-chip sponsorships. As part of the deal, Nike released clothing and footgear bearing Jones’ name.

The champ was often seen donning Nike-branded clothing during media events and on fight nights during his current record title reign.

Jones (20-1 MMA, 14-1 UFC) and Cormier (15-0 MMA, 4-0 UFC) initially scuffled on-stage at MGM Grand Hotel & Casino. Initially, the bout was expected to take place at UFC 178 this coming weekend at the Las Vegas venue, but it was subsequently delayed (due to Jones’ leg injury) and is now slated for Jan. 3 at UFC 182.
