Hurtful communication commonly occurs in all types of close relationships. The prevalent use of verbal aggression in close relationships is highly damaging and is often overlooked as toxic in relationships. It takes many forms and is prevalent across all close, interpersonal relationships. The effects of this kind of communication diminish mental and physical well-being, as well as decrease relationship satisfaction and quality. This talk addresses simple, mindful efforts to recognize and disrupt harmful messages to improve one's overall happiness and well-being. Dr. Kristen Cvancara is a Professor in the Department of Communication Studies at Minnesota State University-Mankato. Kristen has been studying harmful communication practices for two decades to better understand how we learn them and to what degree we use them. Kristen facilitates leadership and professional development seminars and is currently writing a book. Her work with students has earned her the “Dr. Duane Orr Teacher of the Year” award from the MSSA (2013-2014), and her Fulbright work and international research collaboration earned her the “Global Citizen” award from MNSU (2012). This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
