In 1665 England suffered from it’s last outbreak of The Plague (aka Bubonic Plague).

It broke out in London where 20% of the population died.

And then in September, the village tailor in Eyam received a parcel of cloth from the plague-ridden capital….
The next day his assistant was dead.

Panic seized the village and people prepared to flee to safety.

And then, the local priest, William Mompesson made an outrageous suggestion.
He asked the villagers to stay in Eyam so that they would not carry the plague to neighbouring communities and towns.

Aided by his predecessor, Thomas Stanley, Mompesson rallied the villagers who agreed to go into a self imposed isolation.

Eyam Plague Village Story

Having visited Eyam in 2019 during a break in the COVID lockdowns, I was inspired by the actions of these brave villagers.
It was fascinating and also sad, to see the houses, graves, and boundary stones that bear witness to this story.
A history story not about Kings & Queens but about ordinary, everyday people.

As I researched the story, I found so many parallels between Eyam’s plague story and what we were going through with Covid.

Eyam - England’s Plague Village

The Eyam village plague story is not just a tale from history. It is an inspirational story of how ordinary people can rise to meet extraordinary circumstances.
The people of Eyam did not wait for the King or the government to sort their lives out.
They made their own decision and stood by their principles.

Their bravery and selflessness are an example to all of us today.

I have delivered this talk about the plague village of Eyam to many organisations (History societies, WI groups, National Trust Associations) and the reaction has been so positive I wanted to share it with you here on YouTube.

Enjoy.

My name is Chris Green ("The History Chap") and I am on a mission to share the amazing history of Britain so that we can appreciate where we have come from and why we are here.

History should not be stuffy or a long list of dates or kings & queens.
So rather than lectures or Youtube animations, I tell stories that bring the past to life.

My aim is to be chat as if I were having a coffee or meal with you. Jean in Maryland, USA recently wrote: "Chris, is the history teacher I wish I had at school!"

Just for the record, I do have a history degree and continue to have a passion for the subject I studied.
