Implicit Bias and Microaggressions: the Macro Impact of Small Acts

A talk by Professor Derald Wing Sue of Teachers College, Columbia University at Stanford University on January 20, 2015. Professor Sue studies the psychology of racism and antiracism; cultural diversity; and cultural competence. Among many lifetime and outstanding contributions awards, he is the recipient of three awards from the American Psychological Association: Public Interest Award (2013) and the Career Contributions to Education and Training, and the Presidential Citation for Outstanding Service. Dr. Sue received his Ph.D. from the University of Oregon, and has served as a training faculty member with the Institute for Management Studies and the Columbia University Executive Training Programs. He has served as Editor of the Personnel and Guidance Journal (now the Journal for Counseling and Development), Associate Editor of the American Psychologist, Editorial Member to Asian Journal of Counselling, serves on the Council of Elders for Cultural Diversity and Ethnic Minority Psychology, and has been or continues to be a consulting editor for numerous journals and publications. He was the Co-Founder and first President of the Asian American Psychological Association, past president of the Society for the Psychological Study of Ethnic Minority Issues and the Society of Counseling Psychology. Dr. Sue received the 2010 National Diversity and Inclusion Book Prize for his book, Microaggressions in Everyday Life: Race, Gender and Sexual Orientation (Wiley).
