Fluent Listeners

Teaching students to be fluent listeners is a difficult but rewarding task. The majority of listening materials available to students are non-authentic, jilted and often robotic. When you couple this with the fact that assessment is often limited to surface knowledge which does not allow students to demonstrate mastery of important listening skills it is no wonder that Korean students struggle with their fluency in listening. Without fluency in listening students have no frame of reference for fluent speaking. This workshop will focus on how teachers can create and assess their own listening activities to improve the listening skills and sub skills of their students.
Teachers will learn how to use free software to produce their own authentic listening activities. Teachers will also examine different ways of assessing the comprehension of listening with students ranging from absolute beginner through to advanced.

Peadar Callaghan graduated from the University of Limerick with an MA in ELT. He has been working in Korea for over seven years. He currently works for Daegu University and is the first vice president of KOTESOL.
