Feb. 25, 2022 | The Ukrainian government calls on citizens to defend Kyiv as Russian troops close in on the capital. Canada announces sanctions on Russian President Vladimir Putin and his inner circle. Plus, Poland prepares to receive a wave of refugees.
UPDATE Feb. 28, 2022: While the exchange between Ukrainian border guards and Russian forces detailed in this report at 9:23 is not under dispute, there is now a report that the Ukrainian guards may be alive, contradicting the earlier claim by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. The State Border Guard Service of Ukraine said in a statement the fate of the guards is unclear after Russian media reported that they were taken as prisoners. 00:00 The National for Feb. 25, 2022 01:04 Attack on Ukraine 02:05 Russia forces close in on Kyiv 05:04 Putin calls on Ukrainians to surrender 07:44 How Russia got to Kyiv so quickly 09:51 Ukrainians flee to neighbouring Poland 11:52 NATO Response Force activated 14:41 Anti-war protests around the world 15:18 Canada imposes sanction on Putin 17:38 Stores pull Russian products 17:58 Break on long-distance calls to Ukraine 19:25 Ukrainians face tough decisions 26:10 Russian NHL star condemns war 26:42 Major sports events pull out of Russia 27:04 Sanctioning Putin and Russia’s oligarchs 34:28 Ketanji Brown Jackson nominated to court 35:00 U.S. CDC eases indoor mask mandate 35:18 Convoy organizer Pat King denied bail 36:13 Russia forces close in on Kyiv 36:32 Countering Russian military might 39:09 On the frontline of Russian propaganda 42:02 Cellist pays tribute to Ukraine #Ukraine #RussiaUkraine #Kyiv Watch The National live on YouTube Sunday-Friday at 9 p.m. ET Subscribe to The National: https://www.youtube.com/user/CBCTheNational?sub_confirmation=1 Connect with The National online: Facebook | https://www.facebook.com/thenational Twitter | https://twitter.com/CBCTheNational Instagram | https://www.instagram.com/cbcthenational More from CBC News | https://www.cbc.ca/news The National is CBC's flagship nightly news program, featuring the day's top stories with in-depth and original journalism, with hosts Adrienne Arsenault and Andrew Chang in Toronto, Ian Hanomansing in Vancouver and the CBC's chief political correspondent, Rosemary Barton in Ottawa. |
