Can finding lost women from the past help build a better future? | Janina Ramirez | TEDxStormont

video thumbnail
Women have always been the second sex, right? Janina Ramirez argues this is not the full story. Looking back through the Suffragette Movement, to Black Death cemeteries in London, Viking burials in Sweden, and prehistoric sites across Europe, she shows how we can finally rediscover women with agency. By putting the frame on the single biggest section of society written out of historical narratives, we can find others that have also been excluded. Yes – we can empower ourselves to see the past differently, discover fresh foundations for ourselves moving forward, and work towards a more equal future. Dr Janina Ramirez is an Oxford University Fellow, BBC broadcaster and best-selling, award-winning writer for children and adults. As a medievalist, she seeks to uncover hidden histories, finding inspiration from the past on how to build a better present and a fairer future. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
