Cathal Garvey is a Cork-based biohacker. He describes the international DIYBio movement as being somewhat like the revolution that saw the birth of home computers.

A micro-biologist and self-styled 'bio-hacker', Garvey is part of a network of DIY molecular biologists who are attempting to take back the technology from the big boys (eg bio-tech companies and universities) and make it open-source so that anyone can use the technology as a source for good.

In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event.
