The Great Sorting Out: ISIS, Ethnic Cleansing, and the Future of the Levant
October 11, 2015 The best historical comparison to the events taking place in the Middle East today is the multi-ethnic and multi-religious Eastern Europe of WWII. Perhaps the single greatest outcome of WWII was the creation of nation states in Europe that were more ethnically homogeneous than ever before. In the Levant region today, some new borders are being drawn, such as those around the Kurdish regions of Iraq and perhaps Syria. Above all, however, we are witnessing a rearrangement and ethnic cleansing of populations in the Levant to better fit the nation states that were fixed after WWI.
