Vlad the Impaler was a 15th century Wallachian ruler in modern-day Romania who served as the inspiration behind Dracula, the blood-sucking vampire. As a young child, Vlad and his brother were sent to the Ottoman court as hostages. In 1456 he was allowed to return home where he became ruler. Soon after, he had a falling out with his Ottoman overlord, Mehmed Fatih. In 1462, Vlad concocted a daring plan to raid the enemy camp and take out Mehmed himself! Ottoman fears were soon amplified when the Ottomans discovered almost 20,000 of their comrades impaled in a 2 mile long forest of bodies and sticks.
