Kenya's Lionesses rugby sevens squad suffered a major defeat in their opening fixture as the sport made its debut at the Olympic Games on Saturday. The East Africans, who are Africa's sole representative in the women's competition, lost 52-0 to New Zealand in the second match of the day. Three tries from Portia Woodman and two from Kayla McAlister, coupled with a try a piece from Niall Williams, Gayle Broughton and Huriana Manuel, saw the Black Ferns easily claim the victory. In the first match of the day and the first rugby sevens tie in 92 years of the Olympic Games, France beat Spain 24-7. Earlier, members of the sport's governing body, World Rugby, spoke of their pride at having the sport re-admitted to the Olympics.
