Diversity is Not an if, Its a When, Get Use To It | Muhammad Mbowe | TEDxPittsfordMendonHighSchool

video thumbnail
A sophomore at Pittsford Mendon High School, Muhammad Mbowe is dedicated to the student-led initiative Diversify Pittsford. In it, he collaborates with students to organize protests, speaker events, and promote diversity among Pittsford schools. His talk centers around reasons to diversify school curriculums, citing its benefits for students of color with upward mobility. He proposes ways to re-imagine historical events from multiple perspectives through Critical Race Theory and gives a convincing talk about how education needs to include these ideas. Muhammad Mbowe is a sophomore at Pittsford-Mendon High School and is an active member of many extracurriculars there, such as Model United Nations, DECA, and Masterminds. However, his most valued organization is Diversify Pittsford, a student-led organization started by students like Muhammad, who wished to transform Pittsford into a place of acceptance. Their goal is to make Pittsford a place where people, no matter race, sexuality, or background, are not discriminated against. Especially in the wake of the Black Lives Matter movement, the group wants to carry that message forward. You may have seen or been a part of some of the protests they have organized. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
