From the first Pacific Rim trailer, we were enthralled by the kaiju and jaegers of the visionary Pacific Rim movie from Academy Award Winner Guillermo del Toro. Back when the sequel was still called Pacific Rim 2, we were enthralled by the possibilities of even more Pacific Rim Jaeger vs. Pacific Rim kaiju. And after the first Pacific Rim Uprising trailer starring John Boyega, we got our first glimpse of the new kaiju and, more importantly, new 2018 Pacific Rim Jaegers.

The Jaegers are an American interpretation of one of Japan’s coolest cultural exports: Mecha. From mecha anime to mecha manga, mecha series like Mobile Suit Gundam, Macross, Mazinger Z, Neon Genesis Evangelion, Gurren Lagann, and more are shining examples of the country’s obsession with giant robots. However, a mech is more than just a robot. From Gundams to Evas, there are certain tropes that set a Mecha apart from typical anime or tokusatsu shows throughout history, so today, we’re going to figure out if the Jaegers fit the bill.
