The 2023 VinFast VF7 is a novel midsize crossover SUV introduced by the Vietnamese automaker VinFast. Following the VF8, it marks VinFast's second volume production model and targets the fiercely competitive midsize crossover market, setting its sights on established competitors like the Toyota RAV4, Honda CR-V, and Nissan Rogue. Launching its production in 2022, the VF7 has found its place in select global markets including North America and Europe.

Externally, the VF7 boasts a contemporary and dynamic design with well-defined body contours. Adorned with VinFast's iconic V-shaped grille, sleek LED headlights and taillights, and the option for either 19 or 20 inch alloy wheels, the VF7's visual appeal is undeniable. Its dimensions measure 185 inches in length with a wheelbase of 109 inches, and it offers a ground clearance of 7.9 inches for front-wheel drive (FWD) models and 8.3 inches for all-wheel drive (AWD) variants.

Inside, the VF7 comfortably accommodates up to five occupants. The cabin embraces premium materials and plush surfaces, creating an atmosphere of sophistication. Standard technological features include a 10.1-inch touchscreen, a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster, wireless charging, a WiFi hotspot, over-the-air updates, and a comprehensive driver monitoring system. Higher trims elevate the experience further with features such as ventilated front seats, heated rear seats, and a panoramic sunroof.

The VF7 lineup is exclusively propelled by Vinfast's proprietary electric powertrain technology. The base battery offers an 82 kWh lithium-ion pack, while an extended range battery with 87.7 kWh capacity is available. FWD VF7 models achieve an impressive 285 miles on a single charge, whereas AWD models manage 270 miles. With DC fast charging, it's possible to add over 150 miles of range in just 15 minutes. Notably, Vinfast provides a 10-year/124,000-mile warranty for their battery packs.

Performance-wise, the VF7 boasts spirited acceleration, courtesy of a 201 horsepower electric motor situated on the front axle. FWD models achieve 0-60 mph in a brisk 6.5 seconds. Opting for AWD introduces a second 201 hp motor on the rear axle, resulting in a combined output of 402 horsepower and the added traction of all-wheel drive. The VF7 offers various driving modes including Eco, Normal, Sport, and Terrain.

VinFast prioritizes safety by outfitting the VF7 with a suite of advanced driver assistance features. Standard safety technologies encompass forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, blind spot monitoring, rear cross traffic alert, and lane keep assist. Progressing to higher VF7 trims brings additional convenience elements like hands-free parking assist and traffic sign recognition.

Ride and handling are optimized through the VF7's independent MacPherson strut front and multilink rear suspension system. The speed-sensitive steering enhances agility at lower speeds while ensuring stability at highway velocities. Brake-based torque vectoring is standard across all VF7 models, enhancing cornering agility. Overall, the VF7 provides a comfortable and compliant ride suitable for extended journeys.

The VF7 model lineup comprises three trims: Eco, Plus, and Premium. The base Eco trim starts at approximately $41,000 in the US market, offering synthetic leather seats, dual zone climate control, and the 10.1-inch touchscreen. Moving up to the Plus trim introduces features like a glass roof, ventilated front seats, heated rear seats, hands-free parking, and expanded driver assistance technology.

At the pinnacle of the range, the Premium trim commences around $58,000. This fully-loaded variant includes all available options, such as the extended range battery, 20-inch wheels, a 12-speaker audio system, head-up display, and advanced driver assistance systems. Overall, the VF7 provides an enticing proposition, undercutting competing electric vehicles (EVs) in price while delivering comparable features.

A distinctive aspect of VinFast's approach is their battery subscription model. Instead of incorporating the battery cost into the purchase price, VinFast offers customers the choice to subscribe to the battery from $35 per month. This subscription model not only reduces the initial purchase cost but also guarantees free replacement of the battery pack if needed, further enhancing the VF7's affordability.
