IKIGAI | A Japanese Philosophy for Finding purpose to live a Long Life |
![]() |
Ikigai (ee-key-guy) is a Japanese concept that combines the terms iki, meaning “alive” or “life,” and gai, meaning “benefit” or “worth”. So Ikigai means the things which give your life worth, meaning, or purpose. Ikigai is an ancient Japanese philosophy that has enveloped the way Japanese people live. Some believe it’s even the reason for their happiness and longevity.
Ken Mogi, a neuroscientist and author of "The Little Book of ikigai", says that ikigai is an ancient and familiar concept for the Japanese, which can be translated simply as “a reason to get up in the morning” and also explained that while traditional Japanese philosophy focuses on finding your bliss, western interpretation has used ikigai as a method of finding your dream career, "The Ikigai Diagram". Ikigai also appears related to the concept of flow, as described in the work of Hungarian–American psychologist Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi. When you find flow in something you do, it might be seen as in tune with your ikigai, or you may say, your ikigai puts you into the flow state. Flow is a state of mind that you achieve when nothing is way more important than the thing or work you are doing. It's like dissolving yourself into one thing or one task. The flow state “usually occurs when a person’s body or mind is stretched to its limit, in a voluntary effort to accomplish something difficult and worthwhile”.
