Throughout this TED Talk the question: “should we prioritize the health of the environment or the health of humans”, is explored, as a result of the consequences of plastic waste management in the medical industry. The implementation of a forthcoming, innovative solution to this issue is described, aimed at mitigating plastic waste in the medical industry. Finally, this TED Talk covers the application of bioplastics, in addition to data on the environmental effects of plastic waste. Julia, a Brazilian-American student in the class of 2025 at Avenues: The World School, is driven by a passion for medicine and sustainability. Motivated by this passion, she embarked on a journey within the Mastery program at Avenues to explore the intersection of sustainability and medicine, delving into the world of bioplastics and medical devices. Julia's passion materialized in the form of a prototype of a sustainable, biodegradable syringe—a solution created to mitigate plastic waste in the medical industry. With hopes to bring her innovative product to the market, she remains committed to advancing her research. Beyond her medical pursuits, Julia’s interests also include social sciences, fashion, economics, and languages. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
