Why Study Philosophy? Exploring the Importance of Philosophy for Today's World. By Prof. Joe Terry |
|
In this video, Prof. Joe Terry (PhD candidate at the University of Nottingham, and philosophy instructor at CUNY/Kingsborough) presents a thought-provoking set of reasons why the study of philosophy promises to be enriching, empowering, and enlightening, particularly to those many of us today who are typically entangled mostly or only in what he describes as "first-order" concerns with reacting to what the world presents to us. Philosophy enables us to step back and reflect on this first-order engagement from a "second order" philosophical stance of reflection, analysis, and contemplation, and entertain divergent perspectives that enable frame-shifting, liberating insights and novel possibilities for our mode of being and a more responsive – instead of a more reactive – engagement in the world, among many other boons of philosophical activity. After Prof. Terry's presentation, there is a Q&A segment in which student and other philosophy faculty member participants engaged with Prof. Terry's many insightful and spirited ideas.
