Cosatu confirmed that it fired Zwelinzima Vavi

Labour in South Africa is realigning and the future of the once mighty, Cosatu, is now even more uncertain. The Trade Union Federation officially confirmed that it had fired its General Secretary, Zwelinzima Vavi today. Vavi has been at loggerheads with other members of Cosatu's Central Executive Committee and he boycotted the body's latest meeting. He dared Cosatu to fire him and said he would not resign as a deliberate act of defiance. The tension reached boiling point after Cosatu's biggest affiliated union, Numsa, was expelled against Vavi's wishes. Since the several unions have suspended their participation in Cosatu to protest the expulsion and Vavi has supported their cause.
But there is a history of strife with some of it linked to Vavi's criticism of the ANC. Vavi was involved in a sex scandal and has been accused by Cosatu of impropriety in the sale and purchase of Cosatu's headquarters. His expulsion may bring him closer to Numsa and other worker movements that formed the United Front last year - a possible forerunner to a political party that takes on the ANC at the polls.
