Starting to invest in the stock market can be quite confusing when just starting out, especially if you don't have the right tools and knowledge to construct your own portfolio. Luckily, this video takes you through a 5-step process to get you on the right track to investing based on your needs as an investor, with proper asset allocation.

Step 1: The first step is actually to take a moment and reflect on your own life situation and financial situation, your goals as an investor and the time horizon that you’re looking to invest for, and then also your tolerance for risk in relation to the previous points.

Step 2: The next step is to apply this information to your own portfolio's asset allocation. This means that of the capital that you have to invest and the portfolio holdings, what percentage will be allocated to the equity and fixed-income positions?

Step 3: Once you’ve determined the type of investor that you want to be and have also determined the asset allocation that you’re going to move forward with, it’s not time to actually open up a brokerage account

Step 4: Before jumping into picking and analyzing individual stocks, I always recommend that new investors build out a solid base for their portfolio with core exchange-traded funds (ETFs).

Step 5: Learn to actually analyze a stock's quote, income statement and balance sheet the right way, for long-term success.
