With Grace | Short Film Showcase | National Geographic

video thumbnail
Every 11 seconds, a pregnant woman or newborn baby dies somewhere in the world. Almost all these deaths, child and mother, are from preventable causes. With Grace, directed by National Geographic Explorer Austin Meyer, is an intimate look at maternal health care in rural Zambia. The film follows 34-year-old Grace Chibilika as she sets out to have a successful delivery in a region with some of the globe’s highest rates of infant and maternal mortality.

Meyer is an independent documentary filmmaker and cinematographer based in Oakland, California. His work has been featured by HBO, Hulu, the Washington Post, National Geographic, and the UN Population Fund. Meyer graduated from Stanford University with a B.A. in creative writing and an M.S. in journalism, and he was selected by Pulitzer Prize winner Nicholas Kristof for a New York Times international reporting fellowship. Meyer is an inaugural member of the USA for UNFPA’s Leadership Council, which mobilizes support to provide lifesaving care to women and girls worldwide.
