Alleviating Education Inequality In Malaysia, One Child At A Time | Zad Chin Qi Qi | TEDxMCKL |
|
Education poverty is an poignant issue in Malaysia, despite elementary and secondary public education being free. This stems from lack of resources to study, inadequate study environments or children needing to drop out of school to work due to financial circumstances.
Zad heads right into the details of this issue and how she has made a difference to change the education landscape in Malaysia for the better. TEDxMCKL was held on the 18th of July, 2020, virtually on Zoom. It was wholly organised by the students of Methodist College Kuala Lumpur. This year's theme was ctrl+alt+del and the committee aimed to introduced new perspectives and thoughts from Malaysians of various walks of life. Zad is one of the two Malaysians in 2020 that have been accepted to the prestigious Harvard University where she will be studying Computer Science and Social Studies. She is also known for founding not one, not two, but three non-profit bodies - 'base.initiative', a platform that helps post SPM students apply for oversea scholarships; 'projek boundless', a project that aims to provide inspiration and to help students to apply to top universities; and 'Project BAWE', a tutoring service aimed towards students living in B40. Zad was motivated to found all of these projects because she wanted to help alleviate in the education inequality issue in Malaysia. Coming from a low income family, Zad realised at a young age that education in Malaysia wasn't readily accessible to all. She saw how some students struggled in school because they did not have the appropriate resources. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx |
