Carcinoid Heart Disease – Mayo Clinic

video thumbnail
Mayo Clinic cardiologist Heidi Connolly, M.D., discusses carcinoid heart disease. For more information on carcinoid heart disease or to request an appointment, visit http://mayocl.in/2xO7tIZ.

Carcinoid heart disease occurs when a hormone-like substance produced by a tumor enters the bloodstream causing thickening and damage to the valves, which in turn causes the valves to leak. Symptoms of carcinoid heart disease include fatigue, breathlessness, leg swelling, abdominal swelling, and right heart failure. Management of carcinoid heart disease can be challenging due to limited medical therapy options. Diuretics can be used to reduce swelling; however, repairing the valve requires surgical intervention.
