Deltoid Muscle Exercise for Pain Relief and Rehab

The Deltoideus muscle, also referred to as the Deltoids, is the largest muscle of the shoulder.

The Deltoids are made out of three parts. The anterior part, middle part and posterior part. Together they create a triangular shape that covers the shoulder joint. The Anterior part, also called the Clavicular part, is located at the front of the Deltoids and its starting point is at the collar bone. The middle part, also called the Acromial part, is located in between the other two parts of the Deltoid muscle and its starting point is the top part of the shoulder blade.

The posterior part of the Deltoids, also called the Scapular part, is the back part of the Deltoid muscle, and its starting point is at the back of the shoulder blade. These muscle parts move downwards to the arm connecting themselves at a point in the bone of the upper arm, known as Deltoid tuberosity.

Each part of the Deltoid helps differently in movements. The front part helps with flexing the arm. The middle helps with moving the arm out and away from the body. The back part helps with extension of the arm. Together they help secure the shoulder joint.

Most common injury to the Deltoids is overuse of the muscle which may lead to inflammation or tear. Because of the Deltoid location, it is possible that an injury to another muscle or nerve within the shoulder joint or upper arm area, will reflect itself with pain through the Deltoid muscles.

Strengthening and maintaining the Deltoids is important. There are many ways of doing so if its bodyweight exercise, resistance bands or weight training. It is also important to properly stretch the deltoids at the end of upper arm and shoulder workouts to help prevent injuries to the muscle.
